Lower Stars = Brighter Future or Flame Out?
February 1st, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

The headlines for National Signing day in College football included Michigan State University.  And why?  One of MSU’s likely signees of  a Letter of Intent was in jail and did not send in his notification of commitment.

Mark Dantonio built a powerhouse program at MSU in the first part of  the 21 century with 20ish national rankings.  This year’s class is currently ranked (by the services) in the low 30’s.  MSU sits 6th in the BIG Conference in these popularity polls behind – tOSU, UofM, Penn State, Maryland and Nebraska.

So Membership, what is the implication of the drop?

A pragmatist, sage or kill-joy would say, it remains to be seen… BORING!

I prefer to read the tea leafs. Headlines with jailbirds is bad, especially after Coach D repeatedly stated he is placing a greater emphasis on CHARACTER due to 2016’s attrition. Not landing another four star RB,OL / DL lineman or LB on or near NSD is another hit in the parade of bad MSU press, and that hurts. Will it help the chip on the shoulder motivation to overachieve? I doubt it because MSU needs talent in the trenches.

Highly ranked recruits whom waited on their commitment after the 2016 season or decided on NSD did not sign with MSU, In previous years MSU did land a few media hype difference makers in Thomas, McDowell, and Gohlston to name a few. That press adds to a positive culture and spring training momentum. The 3-9 season hurt. Losing Narduzzi hurt. Narduzzi leaving and the statistical defensive downturn since 2014 is not a coincidence. MSU needed a RB badly having not signed one since 2015 and after Weston Bridges hurt his ACL( Weston was among the best in the Midwest). Memphis 4star RB, Richards announced a MSU visit, then cancelled the visit to sign with ex-scUM Durkin at f’n Maryland? Another top athlete goes to Hot Seat Kelly at ND instead of MSU. What is going on? Now the media is playing up LeVeon Bell’s NSD comment to MSU recruits to “enjoy the cold…” instead of a headline quote of you’re in great hands at MSU!

The stoic Coach D and quotable, great recruiter and fiery in Narduzzi who helped make MSU’s D formidable and MSU a winner. MSU football needs balance for the stoic Coach D while the competition appears to be getting the talent MSU targets. GO GREEN!

The next 2 or 3 years cannot be blamed on recruits. The 2015 and 2016 classes were the highest ranked of Dantonio’s tenure. College football is all about the quarterback. Watson showed you that in beating Alabama. We recruited a great D-Line class last year. O-Line was the strength this year, but we have three good QBs in line with Lewerke, deWeaver, and Lombard. We have plenty of receivers. As JaB stated above it’s all about reconstituting a Spartan defense post Narduzzi. Last year’s 3-9 record was all on the D. We led in the 4th qtr of every loss except one. It was painful.

couldn’t agree more. nowadays, if you have an elite QB that is more than half the battle. the rest is a crapshoot. as for being outrecruited by Maryland, which remains to be seen, that is a joke.

Will tell you in 4 years.

I don’t get too wound up by these signing day extravaganzas as Coach D has more often than not done a fine job of identifying and coaching up his recruits (by a wide margin I might add). The loss of someone the caliber of Coach Duzzi on Defense isn’t amendable in a single season or two, so I will step away from that criticism.

That said, you can hear from someone who ESPeeN calls “Coach Mike D’Antoni” here at the 1:00:57 mark.

here’s what I just heard on ESPN during the MSU-Nebraska game. from the 4 minute mark to the 2 minute mark totaling about 5 minutes of air time, reece davis and fran frascilla babbling about Duke. what a surprise.

Winston was tomahawked but pat driscoll decides to swallow his whistle after calling 21 fouls in first half.

I can’t fathom that eron harris has been in this program 3 years and it looks like he never played the game of basketball. pull the plug on him.

did anyone hear at the beginning of the game when reece davis said that Nebraska’s center has the same name as former SCum running back biakabatuka. I mean, where would that come from unless you’re a complete SCum slappy.

I am missing all these Pn babblings other than they stopped commentating in the 2nd half… so the audio is off.

that means you just missed out on the life story of fran frascilla, in which I followed suit and hit the mute button myself. ponderous.

What did McQuaid do or not do to deserve that when up by 17?

this is one road win I wasn’t counting on. now we have to keep it up and persevere in that haven of cheating, ann robber.

I thought a really solid win from the Spartans after losing 3 in a row to the Huskers.

First half defense was weak on the ball screens, but we played good offense with quite a few assists.

After we got whistled for 7 fouls at the beginning of the second half, our defense was really good, closing out on the perimeter, playing the screen and roll and tough defensive rebounding.

I gotta say, I went back on the DVR to see the names of the reffing crew ’cause they were atrocious. Take note: Bo Boroski, Paul Szelc and as mentioned, Pat Driscoll. Gracious, they were awful!
