Michigan State basketball vs. Michigan:  Game time, TV channel and how to watch online

The State News tells us it has been 1,081 days since the last time the University of Michigan Wolverines defeated MSU.

It can also be heard on Sirius/XM Channel 84.

Date: Tuesday, Feb. 7

Location: Crisler Center, Ann Arbor.

The line: Michigan is favored by 4 points.

Broadcasters:  Dan Shulman will handle play-by-play for ESPN with analyst Dan Dakich and reporter Molly McGrath. Will Tieman will call play-by-play with analyst Matt Steigenga on the Spartan Sports Network. Matt Shepard will handle the play-by-play duties with analyst Terry Mills on the U-M Radio Network.

In the last 2 games MSU has seemingly righted the ship, as the team had eight double-figure scorers in beating Michigan and Nebraska. Freshman point guard Cassius Winston has scored 26 points with 7 assists.

Each of U-M’s starting five are shooting north of 40 percent from field goal range and the Wolverines come in leading the country in fewest turnovers per game and are also shooting a conference-best 79.0 percent from the free-throw line.

I hope the team we saw at Nebraska shows up tonight. We have two winnable games at home coming up which would give them a 5 game win streak and some much needed confidence.

Foul disparity; turnover disparity (will be tough for MSU to break even); and Spartan perimeter D are my biggest concerns. Long-range Gulo shots just seem to do nothing but go in when they are at home.

My hunch for this game has been Gulos by two ever since the last meeting. That would be good enough for me to feel confident about a 10-8 B1G record. A two-possession Spartan win (or more) will put 12-6 in not-so-pipe-dreamy play, I think.

I am not at all confident of a win at Crisler. The 8 point win over um at Breslin when the Spartans shot over 52% on field goals, over 45% from the 3, and 74% from the line while holding the gulos to 34% overall and 27% from the 3 was not a blowout as those stats would imply and would be a tall order to come close to duplicating on the road. That being said a much needed win would be spectacular. Go Green!

very simple. tonight we want ted valentine. his specialty is screwing the home team. as for the announcers, we get to hear dakich, whose son plays for or played at SCum.

      1. Careful what you wish for…
      2. I wi” be watching without sound. he grates on me.
      3. SCum hasn’t played well lately and usually teams just can’t turn it on and off, ergo, I predict a Spartan’s Will type win.
      4. Supposedly not a sell out either, so maybe more than a few Spartan faithful will be in attendance.

      GO GREEN !!!

Technical on Nick Ward. That’s a tough call in my opinion to gauge intent on that. Appeared he was looking down.

(Looked like tripping to me. Ward is not that clumsy.)

This is pretty much par for the course for MSU on the road this year. They have been pretty much awful in first half of every road B1G game.

Matt Hoeppner ‏@matthoeppner 8m8 minutes ago
Say what you want about the bad half court offense, and it’s bad, but the defense is worse.

Matt Charboneau ‏@mattcharboneau 10m10 minutes ago
Appears the only thing in doubt at this point is the final score … and it’s not yet halftime

Matt Hoeppner ‏@matthoeppner 5m5 minutes ago
It’s completely inexcusable for them to be this out of sorts in a rivalry game after having the weekend off. Pathetic.

Matt Charboneau ‏@mattcharboneau 5m5 minutes ago
To give up that drive and kick with what, 5 seconds, was pure lack of defensive effort

Matt Charboneau ‏@mattcharboneau 6m6 minutes ago

All those pictures of empty seats at Crisler and it was the Spartans who really didn’t bother to show up.

David Harns ‏@isportsDave 6m6 minutes ago
Hard to judge intent, of course. And it won’t make me popular in East Lansing… but I think Nick Ward knew exactly what he was doing there. (On the trip of Wagner).

Matt Charboneau ‏@mattcharboneau 8m8 minutes ago
Not surprisingly, the 55 points allowed are the most MSU has allowed in a half this season. Gave up 45 to Purdue & Northeastern

Chris Solari ‏@chrissolari 12m12 minutes ago
HALFTIME: Michigan 55, MSU 29. Duncan Robinson with another 3-pointer at the buzzer. Wolverines 8 for 11 from beyond the arc.

4 shot clock violations. (Seemed like more that that).

    12 turnovers.

Losing by 26 points at the half.

All this after plenty of rest.

Coming out of the locker room with no energy only to go down by 30 points one minute into the 2nd half.

21 Turnovers last night and a conference high 14.5 per game TOs. What caused the TO’s carelessness or defensive pressure.

If it was defensive pressure, I am inclined to say: what do you expect? The four shot clock violations lead me to believe MSU running a similar half court offense for two decades requires perfect execution….but by freshman… on the road . That explains the road loses and inconsistency to a degree, Perhaps, something needs to CHANGE?

    • JerseyJohn writes:

not only are they freshman, but contrary to the hype they came in with, they’re not as good as advertised. there are good freshman throughout he country. remember, these guys were outplayed by penn state’s freshman. the hometown media builds these guys way up before they even enter college. very few can live up to these lofty expectations.

First tuned in to the game via radio late in the first half. Kept thinking I was mishearing the score as the points kept growing (for the Gulos).

According to ESPN Stats & Info, those 30 points allowed off of turnovers is the most by a Spartan team in five years.

That previous 29-point loss to the Gulos cited by Kindle was during Izzo’s first year. That Spartan team, in the NIT, beat Washington at home before losing at Fresno State. It finished the year 16-16 (9-9).

In light of the magnitude of this loss it will be interesting to see, if MSU struggles on Saturday or on Tuesday, whether the home crowd registers any discontent.

The margin of this defeat is Interesting and ironic. MSU is slipping into oblivion in B1G hoops. A .500 record is more than likely as was TI’s first season coaching at MSU. Wisconsin has kicked our butts since Bo Ryan came and left and Maryland is also a better program then MSU. Purdue would probably be a better program than MSU without Matt Painter… Something has to change: the ridiculous scheduling, the beating down of freshman talent to confirm to TI’s all man to man defense and no zone, and the lack of quality bigs coming and producing for more than one season at MSU.

The record of every MSU player under Izzo sees a final four is gone and soon to be forgotten.

Izzo said a month or two ago that he would never combine as brutal a slate of early-season games with as brisk & exhausting a pace of traveling (miles). Losing two bigs for an entire season is also, I think, both anomalous and beyond Izzo’s control.

Let us see if MSU loses its next game before predicting something like 16-16.
